Attendance

If Your Child Is Absent

If you know your child will be absent, please contact Ms. Ann in the front office (469-405-8967 or aabercrombie@ptaaschool.org). Students are responsible for collecting any missing work they accumulated while they were out.

Texas 90% Rule

Texas attendance rules state a student must be in each class at least 90% of the time if they want to earn credit for each class. This applies to all students, including those with IEPs and 504 plans.

This applies to both excused and unexcused absences.

187 Days

The school year is about 187 days. A student can only miss about 18 days of school or 18 days of a specific class. If it is a semester class, only about 9 days. Otherwise, their class credit is in jeopardy.

How This Affects Students

If an elementary student misses more than 10% of all school days, they are at risk of repeating their current grade.

A secondary student might have to repeat a certain class if they missed more than 10% of the days the classes were offered.

Truancy

A school district is required to adopt truancy prevention measures. If a student has 3 or more unexcused absences for 3 or more days or parts of days within a 4-week period but less than 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period, the district shall initiate truancy prevention measures.

Parents will be notified of attendance requirements at the beginning of each school year. They will be notified again if a student has a certain number of unexcused absences.
